Youth Ministry
We are a Christ-centered community, looking to build disciples, and we're committed to reaching our city, state, and world.
Are you looking for a way to get more connected? We'd love to have you join us as we grow closer to Christ and learn more about our purpose in the world. And, oh yeah, we have a GREAT time doing it!!
The Mission of the St. Luke Youth Group is to make and grow disciples of Jesus Christ. We achieve this goal by offering Jesus Christ to every youth at every opportunity.
Our theme for the group this year is "Army of the Lord!" We believe that we are all called to be active soldiers in the advancement of the gospel and that it is our responsibility to do all we can to further the kingdom of Christ.
We work to equip ourselves for the mission by studying God's Word, worshiping together, serving others and enjoying the fun and fellowship that comes from working together to achieve a common goal.
We're recruiting new soldiers every day and would love to have YOU join our team!
"If you love me you will keep my commandments." - John 14:15

St. Luke Respite Care Ministry is a program designed to assist caregivers and their loved ones. This program is geared toward older adults (60 and above.) We have an on-site program that meets 3 times a week on the St. Luke campus from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Trained professionals and volunteers provide socialization and stimulating activities in a safe, secure and caring environment. During this time, the caregiver has free time to run errands, relax, or take care of business. We are delighted to be in our new location- 1021 Third Avenue. Parking is readily available and access to the building is user friendly. We now have our own private outdoor area, a recreational kitchen, and a beautifully decorated home to call our own. We also have a caregiver support group that meets the fourth Tuesday on each month at 12:45PM in the conference room at St. Luke. Mabry Collins from the Pastoral Institute facilitates this group. We recognize that caring for a family member or loved one is gratifying: but it is also challenging. We are here to help! Our participants enjoy being with others and being active while they are with us. If you are interested in knowing more about this ministry, please contact Carol Boers, Director Respite Care Ministry at 706-256-3117 or email her at cboers@stlukeum.com.
Campus Ministry
Our Campus Ministry resides near the Uptown campus of Columbus State University and is led by the Reverend Brett Maddocks.
This organization is a joint ministry of the Wesley Foundation (the Georgia Board of Higher Education of the United Methodist Church) and St. Luke United Methodist Church. We exist to make and grow disciples of Jesus Christ. While we are supported by the United Methodist Church, we welcome all students.
Our college house provides a nice escape for many students during a long week at school. It is located at 1030 2nd Ave. in uptown Columbus, GA. It is a beautiful two story white house situated just across the street from St. Luke United Methodist Church. We are within walking distance to the downtown music department of CSU.
We have recently renovated the bottom floor of the house to accommodate meals, gatherings and worship. The downstairs area is a great place to meet with friends, have a cup of coffee and study. We have currently added a game room and a new study area. Our facilities include wireless internet access, cable and a comfortable study environment. When the library overflows, you may want to try our College House.
We have a wonderful group of students who are excited about the Lord and growing in their faith. Our worship services are a wonderful way to connect with God and the body of Christ. It is our desire to offer a healthy Christian community to all the students of Columbus State University.
The Lord continues to bless our service and I am excited about what the future holds for our ministries at the Methodist Campus Ministry.
The journey continues...

Praise Bands
The praise band ministry at St. Luke is divided into four worship teams that rotate leadership throughout each month. Working together, these groups strive to create a meaningful contemporary worship environment every Sunday morning at the 9:00am service. There are often openings in praise bands for various instruments and/or voices. To schedule an audition, please contact Hannah Massie at hmassie@stlukeum.com or at (706) 327-4343.
Children's Ministry
Children's ministries at St. Luke give children the opportunity to grow closer to God and others through fun and engaging activities, including Sunday School, children's choirs, and other exciting programming. The children's ministry at St. Luke provides kids the opportunity to learn important faith-building skills regarding worship, servant leadership, and a personal relationship with God. Our Sunday School program provides a welcoming, fun environment for children to learn about their faith and meet other children. Other programming at St. Luke includes Children's choir program, St. Luke Summer Camp, Wednesday afternoon activities, Vacation Bible School, Scouting, and many exciting seasonal activities!
Childrens' Ministries Purpose
At St. Luke UMC we minister to the needs of children through nurturing, loving, offering opportunities for play and learning, and through guidance for spiritual growth. We believe that the Christian nurture of our children is a joint responsibility of the church-at-large and individual families. Having your child baptized as an infant as well as getting him or her involved in the children's programs begins this nurturing process. We recognize that children (infants through fifth grade) have needs and capabilities that vary by age. We are committed at St. Luke to plan programs that are appropriate to the physical, social, and spiritual growth of each age group. We hope that as a family you will become involved in these and the many other ministries of the church.

Children's Worship
Children of all ages learn to worship by worshipping. Children form deeper and richer images of God when they regularly experience worship with their family in the context of the larger church family, the body of Christ. They sense a connection to something that is much larger than themselves and their family.
Children's bulletins are available for all children attending Sunday worship services and are found in front of the first pew in the Sanctuary or on the entrance table for the Contempary worship service. The bulletins contain activity sheets for both preschool and elementary age which follow the church year.
Children's Worship (11:00)
Our Goal: to engage our younger children (Kind5-3rd grade) in worship in a way that allows them to participate in both a portion of the adult worship service and also an age specific worship experience.
This is how Children's Worship works:
1. Children begin service in the sanctuary with their family.
2) After the pastoral prayer all children (youngest-5th grade) are invited to come forward to the chancel area for the children's sermon. St. Luke clergy bring a message to the children which is based on the scripture for the sermon of the day or season of the church year. After the childre's sermon children K-3rd are invited to Turner Chapel for an extended time of worship. Together these children and adults exit the sanctuary and walk to Turner Chapel where they will be involved in age appropriate worship for the remainder of the church service. Younger preschool children may be taken by their parents to the nursery at this time. Children older than 3rd grade (or those who do not wish to participate in children's worship) may return to their seats with their family.
3) Upon arriving at Children's Church the children sing several upbeat children's songs. This is followed by the offering. Children are encouraged to bring offering each Sunday. We talk about why we give offering, ettique of offering, followed by the Doxology. Children serve as ushers. They are assigned on a rotating basis. St. Luke clergy lead the children in appropiate Bible story teaching which coorelates with the church year. We use Kid's Own Worship as a basis for our children's church.
4) Communion- On the first Sunday of the month when the 11:00 congregation celebrates Holy Communion, our children also participate in the sacrament of Holy commuion. We learn why we take commuion, symbols of communion, and commuion ettiquet.
5) Parents whose children participate in Children's Church are assigned a Sunday to assist with Children's Church. This involves just seating with the children and encouraging them to listen and participate in the morning service
6) Parents are to pick up their children from Turner Chapel immediately following the worship service.

First Saturday
The St. Luke First Saturday Ministry offers a casual worship experience and a hot meal on the first Saturday of every month. The ministry is targeted for the 'down and out', but everyone is welcome. One of the pastors preaches, we all sing great gospel music, sometimes there's a solo from one of the guests, and then we dig into fried chicken and peach cobbler. Volunteers should contact John House at john.house@agilecast.com. Volunteer time is about hours.
Operation Appreciation
OA is St. Luke's ministry with troops in Basic Training at Ft. Benning. On the fourth Saturday of every month (except November and December), volunteers gather to welcome the soldiers to a time of rocking praise music, "forbidden food" (all the things they've been denied while in Basic: pizza, chips, soda, candy, nachos, ice cream, and sweet tea), a devotional by the senior pastor, ESPN, hoops, calling their loved ones on volunteers' cell phones, or just visiting around the table with St. Luke volunteers. The evening concludes with a circle of prayer around the soldiers. We have heard from troops in Afghanistan and Iraq who have been touched by this ministry, as well as from the parents of these soldiers. Volunteers should contact Maggie Roberson at maggie@stlukeum.com. Volunteer time is about 3 hours.

Samaritan Fund
The Samaritan Fund is St. Luke's emergency ministry to those in financial crisis. We assist as funds are made available through the generous support of St. Luke members as well as other contributing congregations. Food Pantry
The Food Pantry is another emergency assistance ministry of St. Luke which assists families with groceries twice a year. To volunteer, please contact Franke Adams at 706-323-0917.
Meals on Wheels
St. Luke's Meals on Wheels ministry is the largest one of its kind in the area, with four routes daily. Volunteers take one day a month to deliver meals to the homebound. Meals are cooked in the St. Luke kitchens and are delivered hot. To volunteer, contact Susan St. John at srstjohn@aol.com

Children's Ministries Communion and Baptism
Communion
Children are invited and encouraged to partake in the sacrament of Holy Communion. Over the course of their years in Sunday School, Children's Worship, and Confirmation our children learn of the many levels of meaning and symbolism of the sacrament of Holy Communion.
"All who intend to lead a Christian life, and their children, are invited to receive the bread and cup. We have no tradition of refusing any who present themselves desiring to receive." The United Methodist Book of Worship, pg. 29.
Baptism
The pastoral staff is available to meet with parents to discuss this important step in the life of your child. We realize that members of St. Luke United Methodist Church come from a variety of faith traditions and may have questions regarding the practice of infant baptism. The tradition of the United Methodist Church is to encourage the baptism of infants and young children so that they may be fully incorporated into the life of the gathered community of faith, the Body of Christ in this place. To schedule a baptism, please call Maggie Roberson (706-327-4343 ext 18). Baptisms are scheduled to occur during either of the Sunday morning worship services (8:25, 9:00 and 11:00 am). There may be Sundays throughout the year when the scheduling of a baptism may be discouraged due to previously planned liturgical events. When the baptism is scheduled, the officiating pastor will meet with the family to discuss the specifics of the service.
Confirmation
Confirmation Process The confirmation process at St. Luke UMC happens in the 6th Grade year to mark the transition from childhood to adolescence in terms of one's faith journey and one's intentional participation in the life of the church. It is a time when these young people ponder what it means to claim the name of Christian and the tradition of United Methodism. The confirmation process is also a gift of presence, instruction, mentoring, and community building, given by the clergy, parents, and other committed laity of the congregation. The Confirmation Class meets every Sunday during the Sunday School hour from January through March. The process includes a confirmation breakfast, day retreat, service projects, and a spring weekend retreat.
Third Grade Bibles In third grade, our children receive an engraved Bible, given by the congregation and presented to them on Promotion Sunday in August during the 11:00 am worship service. The third grade Sunday School class spends the remainder of the school year learning to use that Bible, studying many of the Old and New Testament stories. If your child becomes part of our congregation after August of their third grade year, please inform one of his or her Sunday School teachers and we will see that he or she also receives an engraved Bible
Warriors of the Word W.O.W. The goal of W.O.W. is to provide monthly activities during the school year for our 4th and 5th graders, so that they may develop lasting friendships among their peers and meaningful relationships with caring adults in our church community. The activities include group recreational events, discussions, and service opportunities. Parents are strongly encouraged to be part of one or more of the activities as chaperones, drivers, or the provider of a light meal.
Children's Sunday
One Sunday during the year (usually the last Sunday in April) we celebrate the ministry of children. All parents of infants who have been born since the previous year are asked to be present that Sunday for an Infant Recognition. Pictures are taken of the babies and their parents on the front steps of St. Luke. Chldren lead the worship service this day along with the Children's Choirs. This is great day of celebrating children.
Nursery
Welcome!
What a blessing it is to have babies, toddlers, and other little ones here at St. Luke United Methodist Church! It is our pleasure to have your child entrusted in our care, and we take great care in nurturing and protecting them in God's love.
As a part of the nursery ministry at St. Luke, we want your child to see the love of Christ through the care they receive when they are with us. It is our desire to provide: a safe, friendly environment where Christ's love is demonstrated through loving nurturing caregivers; a place for children to learn and play while their parents participate in worship, Bible studies, and fellowship without worry; a positive nursery experience for both child and parent.
Each nursery (birth to 4 yr old) is maintained by paid workers.
During Sunday School, two, three, and four year-olds study age appropriate Bible stories using a variety of activities including storytelling, art, games, music and more. Sunday School is lead by adult volunteers along with paid nursery staff. All curriculum and methods are designed to be age-appropriate.
Location: Our nurseries are located in the main church building on the first floor preschool wing which runs parallel to Eleventh Street. Child care is provided for all children birth through PreK4. The nurseries are available during all regularly scheduled services and ministries. Wednesday evening and or other specialized times child care is provided in the Ministry Center Child Care room when a nursery is needed for a smaller program which is happening in the Ministry Center. The Ministry Center Nursery is also used for those young children whose parents are attending the 9:00 Contemporary Worship. We recommend that if you are participating in Sunday School that you bring your child to the nursery in the main church building before the 9:00 Worship. This avoids confusion on your child's part and helps with separation anxiety.
How Parents and Guardians can Help!
Please complete the sign-in sheet, which is located on the half-door ledge in each room.
We have pagers available in the Infant/Toddler/Creeper area. If your child is in another nursery room, and you would like a pager, we will be happy to help you get one. Just let the caregiver in your child's room know, and he/she can help!
Your diaper bag should contain the following items (labeled with your child's name):
3-4 diapers
A plastic bag for wet diapers /clothes
A bottle
A bib
A complete change of clothes
Just FYI . . .
We provide apple juice and snacks for the children in the Toddler – 4 Year nursery rooms. Usually, "goldfish," graham crackers, animal crackers, and cheerios are on the menu! Please let us know if your child is allergic to any foods/juices, or if you do not want your child to have a particular snack.
